Three facts you didn't know about oily skin - Beauty Full Time

22nd February 2022 | Beauty | Posted by Megan Bromley

Oily skin can be hard to live with, especially if you are unsure on how to treat it.

Ever had your makeup slide off, or go patchy where the excess oil seeps through during the day? Or you may be experiencing oily patches on some areas of your face and extremely dry patches on others? If so, this blog is for you!

Oily skin needs to be treated carefully, it needs moisture and specific types of products to reduce and normalise the amount of oil it produces. Here are three facts about oily skin that you may not know:

1.) Oily skin is lacking moisture

Often when the skin is oily there is a reluctance to use moisturiser. Oily skin is actually crying out for moisture. Skipping moisturiser can cause an increase in oil/ sebum production, as your skin is working overtime to protect the skin and keep it hydrated. Ideally moisturise after cleansing twice per day. Look for moisturisers that are oil-free, mattifying or water-based. I always recommend the Decleor White Clay Daily Care. This is a fantastic, hydrating moisturiser that keeps the skin matte. It contains Salicylic Acid which is great for reducing breakouts and White Clay which helps to mattify and reduce excess oil/sebum.

2.) Excess Oil is actually called Sebum

Sebum is a mixture of oil and sweat that seeps through the pores and creates excess shine on the skin. The aim is to reduce the amount of Sebum produced to a more 'normal' level. Using a toner will help remove excess oil after cleansing and minimise the pores. It also helps remove any remaning sebum, dirt or grime that cleansing hasn't (you won't believe what is left, even after a double cleanse). The Clarins Purifying Toning Lotion works really well. It is alcohol-free and contains Sea Kelp to help balance and Meadowsweet to purify and reduce shine.

3). Oily skin ages more slowly

This is a big advantage to having oily skin. The more moisture you have in your skin helps with anti ageing and prevents wrinkles from forming. Drier skin types are more prone to premature ageing. Overnight is when you can really go overboard with moisturising oily skin. No one can see how oily you look when you go to bed, therefore this is a great opportuity every night, to feed your thirsty, oily skin. I have seen some great results with the Decleor Rosemary Officinalis Night Balm. This night balm is super hydrating, but also contains some amazing ingredients (Rosemary, Ylang Ylang, Lemon, Lavender, Clary Sage & Clove) to help reduce excess Sebum, pore size and blemishes.

With the correct knowledge of what your oily skin needs, combined with the products that are specific to your skin type, you can improve the appearance of your skin more quickly than you might think. Check out our Struggling to workout your skin type blog if you are still unsure on your skins individual characterstics.
